I'm not quite sure where I stand with Drum n Bass at the moment. I used to love jump-up, but now certain high-profile producers seem to churn out wave upon wave of terrible terrible stuff, and the raves are full of wankers. On the other hand, certain heads are pulling out some nice, dark numbers. One thing's for certain though - mcs can do one! I'm loving this jokes tune by Noisia at the moment. Check it.
I've only recently got into techno, and to be honest don't know much about it. One thing I do know however, is that the production duo Format:B are sick. Of the tunes I've got, theirs are the ones which seem to stick out. Here's one my favourites. Banging.
This Jack Beats remix is probably my favourite tune of 2008. Since it's creation, every DJ dropped it in every set ever. Why? Because it's FUCKING SICK! Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz releases singles and EPs under a variety of project names, including Pryda, Cirez D, Sheridan, Dirty Funker, Moo, A and P Project, Axer, Hardform, Dukes of Sluca, and Groove System. Most of these singles are released on his own labels, which include Mouseville, Pryda, and Pryda Friends. Under his own name, however, Prydz favors straightforward, club-oriented house with a line in remakes of mildly cheesy pop songs from the 1980s.

"It's sort of twisted minimal vs cheeky minimal" these are the words used to discribe this mix when it was given over to me by the talented Alfie Granger-Howell aka Solarity aka Spencer Vallance. Having looked high and low for a quality minimal set and failed, this set has made my fortnight (hoping Spencer Vallance will give me another in a couple weeks). Looking forward to hearing this duo through some Funktion 1 sound soon.

Waveform was a wicked festival. Generally the people were really chilled and friendly, it was hassle-free, and the music was crisp, loud and banging.
I was expecting a big glade-style festival - large crowds and heaving dancefloors. With only about 2000 people though, it was pretty small, and when I first checked out the dancefloors I admit I was not impressed, particularly with the archangel stage (where most of the breaks was and where I knew I would spend most of my time) which was the smallest main arena and tiny in comarison to some festival stages. However, this minor problem spawned three massive advantages which made the festival so good: 1. You could walk from one end of the festival to the other in less than 10 minutes - even in the mud - which meant no long missions to get something back at the campsite. 2. If you lost your mates you would inevitably bump into them again shortly. 3. It created a really cool intimate vibe that ive never felt at a festival before. Besides, when the music is good it doesn't really matter what size the tent is. Apart from a couple of nobs selling overpriced laughing gas the crowd was probably the friendlist ive ever seen at a festival. The security were also really chilled- upon arrival they greeted us in a friendly manor but barely checked our wristbands, let alone considered searching us. About half an hour later we were sorting various lines out and some security people approached with a full view of what we were up to, asked us how we were doing and then just left us to it.
Waveform this year was set in a beautiful green countryside location. A big green hill loomed over the whole area which was cool, and with a short walk up to the top you were gifted with a beautiful view over the whole festival and beyond. The odd seemingly wild horse impressively darting around the steep slope was also a nice touch. There was some tasty organic food on offer in the 'Organic Food Emporium' (I particularly liked the Indian/Chinese place offering chinese style chicken samosas), and some good homemade beer and cider available from the bar. Walking from the campsite there were 4 main arenas in a row- Project storm (techno, dnb, hard trance), the Tribe of Frog tent (all things psychadelic and dressed up in typical ToF style), the Archangel tent (breaks, dnb) and then tucked into the corner of the festival finally was the main stage, which had everything from psy-trance to reggae bands to minimal blasting out from its brilliant speakers-big up Opus Pocus for some amazing sound. The other tents boasted good systems as well. Archangel had the infamous funktion one which never fails to blow me away. The Tribe tent had the music at really nice volume- loud and crisp without being offensive. The 24 hour music license for saturday night was also a massive bonus and something more festivals defintely need to imitate. Stand out acts for me were the Equalizers with some fat and energetic electro / breaks, Subterra with some dark late-night dnb, and of course the mighty Far Too Loud who came on directly after the fairly ridiculous 'Earth Dance' and smashed it with a live set showcasing their mind-blowing psychadelic take on breakbeat. There was also some really good pys-trance, probably some good hard-trance (although I personally wouldn't know), and for all the minimal lovers out there, I heard some really cheaky sounding stuff pumping from the main stage which im sure was jokes. On top of this there was also the Cats Cradle stage, a little tent with a bit everything, offering a chilled escape from the main throb of the festival. Basically, there was great music of all varieties on offer at any given time so you could nearly always find what you were looking for (without of course going on a long trek). In fact, there was only one major problem with Waveform- during the day the crowd were generally much more up for chilling than dancing, which meant the tents were often quite empty. This was particularly the case with the main stage. There were times when some brilliant reggae bands were playing out in the sunshine on a great system and only about ten people were taking any proper interest, which to me seemed almost criminal. Perhaps the organisers need to think about the positioning of the stage- being the furthest from the campsite it is quite easy to get drawn into another tent on your way, even against your intentions.
There was also the mud. However, whilst it did get quite muddy there was still plenty of grass to chill out on and keep the place attractive, and anyone who had been to Bestival the week before would have felt blessed in comparison. You cant go to an English festival and complain about the mud, especially give then time of year.
Waveform was simply very fun and very easy- easy to find, a short queue to get in, short walks about the place, really good drugs in abundance, and plenty of good music. At just £78 a ticket plus the fact that its possibly the last festival of the summer, there really are no excuses for not showing up next year!
Mujava is a DJ from Pretoria, South Africa that was brought to my attention by Zane Lowe, on a radio interview he did on Radio 1. Asked whether he was shocked that it had made it abroad, and recieved the response it had he said replied "yes of course". I cannot imagine why. This tune it heavy. It takes you places that a tune hasnt done for a long time. It's got bits of old-school UK electronica, tribal, minimal, some...hell, I don't even really know how to describe it. If you think this is the sound coming out of Africa, don't, according to Mujava, his sound is unique and he is doing something special. With his help there will be more.
The electronic music scene has been dominated by Europeans (and, at times, various Americans) for the longest time now, so might this be the beginning of a new wave of electronic music from elsewhere in the world? Still too soon to say, but this song is intriguing at the very least and hopefully we'll be seeing more from Mujava and his peers soon. The single came out digitally on Warp Records/This Is Music LTD on August 11th, and will be out on 12" next week, on the 15th. I won't post the MP3 for download since friends of mine are ones putting it out, but I'll at least stream it so that you can fall in love with it and then go buy it yourself.

London has been having one of its wettest summers in ages, and there has been intense flooding around the nation, so when the heavens opened up as I was walking to the beautiful confines of Victoria Park, I worried that day one Lovebox was under threat of being renamed Mud-box. Fortunately the rain gods were only teasing us. When I arrived at around 3.30 p.m., just in time to catch Patrick Wolfe, the sun and blue skies had begun to peek their heads out from behind the grey clouds.
Now in its fifth year, the Groove Armada boys seem to have the festival thing down pat, and there was a good mix of musical talent, eclectic stage set-ups and other attractions.
Dubbed a mini-Glastonbury by organizers, this feeling rang true, as despite some low-key sponsoring, it felt relatively corporate free. Food options were plentiful and went far beyond burgers and chips (with the jerk chicken stall taking my vote).
The tent of the afternoon for me though had to be Secretsundaze. Tucked away in the furthest corner of the grounds, the circular fenced enclosure had a real backwoods feel to it with a bayou porch of a stage. The centrepiece was of course the infamous Secretsundaze disco ball which hung from a giant stump of a tree. Giles Smith and 2000 and One spun house tracks that were perfect for mid-afternoon, the loyal SS crowd responded, and the result was a dirty (in a good way) daytime afterparty-like vibe.
San Miguel are putting on 5 music events over the summer, under the name Hidden Depths. There have already been 2. The first of which was in London at the Soho Revue Bar, which is an amazing venue actually. Prior to the event no one knew what the line up was, just that it was hosted by Mark Jones of Wall of Sound. The secrecy of the line up is the running theme of Hidden Depths. So in the end, everyone was treated to the likes of Shortwave Set, A Human, Propellerheads, and The Infadels, and lots of free San Miguel.
The second event was on the 10th July in Manchester, at a venue called Joshua Brooks. It was a unbelievable night. It was covered in Hidden Depths decor, big leather sofas, and huge LCD screens showing art film. The highlight though was definitely the music... obviously. Again the public were only aware that The Glimmers were going to be there. In the end though the crowd was blessed with the likes of THE Grandmaster Flash, and the Unabombers. The Glimmers smashed it, Unabombers smashed it, and The Grandmaster definitely smashed it. So that’s Hidden Depths so far. There are 3 more events to come. Secretsundaze, Chromeo, and It’s Pop It’s Art. Secretsundaze is on the 31st July at T-Bar, London. Featuring the likes of Theo Parrish, James Priestley, Giles Smith and 3 more TBC. The Chromeo event is 21st August at The End, there are another 9 acts playing including a certain somebody who was surprsingly epic at Glastonbury. The final event It’s Pop It’s Art, is on the 18th September at The Amersham Arms. Hosted by Fred Deakin of Lemon Jelly who I love.
