Matter, of course, is the new multi-million pound venue from the team behind Fabric. Doubters might be pointing to its South of the river dwelling and corporate habitat inside the 02 but the reality is the arrival of the most technologically advanced venue in the capital and a music roster that has already heard Sasha, Carl Cox, John Digweed. Deadmau5 and Simian Mobile Disco pump their respective sounds through the venue's revolutionary Body Kinetic Soundsystem.

With voting officially closed for the annual DJ Mag Top 100 poll, attentions now turn to the results party which takes place this year at London’s Ministry of Sound, October 29th. Among those performing on the night will be French techno connoisseur Laurent Garnier, the currently all-conquering Deadmau5, Ibiza mainstay David Guetta, Toolroom boss Mark Knight and the ‘Worlds Number 1 DJ’ who has apparently been confirmed. The line-up is notable by its distinct lack of trance artists who regularly dominate the standings and in particular the top 10. UK Beatbox champion Beardyman will be hosting the event which will cost a nominal 5 pounds entry with all proceeds going to the RNID’s Dont Lose the Music campaign. "80 sub bass drivers under the floor linked that are linked to the music " .... is all I can say about the new 'super' club Matter - informally labelled 'The One' of all nightclubs. Fabric owners Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie led the multimillion-pound project, that opened last weekend and I have only heard of one review. Judging from the photos and the equipment that they've got in there, it's a gooden. Although, it seems transport is going to be an issue of which I hear a boat ferry is going to solve.

In terms of the sound. The main sound system for the club is based around a Martin Audio W8L Longbow line array. Matter’s VIP lounge will feature Void Acoustics Air Motion, Airten, Axys and Mycro loudspeaker systems. Void supplied over 30 loudspeakers for the area, which features a dance floor and seven private-entertainment booths. Two custom-designed bass enclosures – the Axsys X, a 2 x 18-inch multiple resonant chamber design, and the compact 2 x 12-inch Mycro are housed in the area.The dance floor contains two pairs of Void's signature Air Motion triple-horn mid/highs combined with four Axys X subs with Airten twin-coil units used for infills and DJ monitors. The private boots in the area feature an Airten unit and a Mycro X that has been specially designed to fit under the booth furniture. The Micro X features two 12-inch drivers in a space that usually fits only one driver, thus increasing the subs power to 1500 Watts.... yeah ... so it's got completely sick sound basically!
Out with the old, in with the new. That’s the way London’s club scene has been moving recently with the closure of Turnmills, The End, The Cross, The Key and Canvas in recent months.
For a while it seemed like there was nowhere new for London’s electronic music fans to congregate, but then the people behind Fabric opened Matter, and from this weekend Shoreditch will have a new dance spot in the form of the Cube.
Cube is located at 55-61 Tabernacle Street, and from the looks of things, its owners hope to mop up some of the more clued-up London clubbers with a musical policy of nu disco and indie dance. Best of all, Cube is free to get into.
With a lighting system modeled on Studio 54 in New York and Paris Paris (look at the Cube’s groovy lighting system above!) the club is located in the basement of the Tabernacle Bar and will host disco and leftfield promoters like Crispin Dior and Ben Rymer, East London duo Lou and Nova, and Blitz Club.
The Cube will be open from 9pm - 2am most night, and expect a soundtrack of discofied funk to get deep to.
London’s Fabric club is a shining beacon in clubland and proof that it is possible to fill a club week in, week out without booking the same old boring big name DJs. For Fabric’s 9th birthday weekend, the club is pulling out all the stops to showcase nothing but the best in underground techno, minimal, breaks and drum & bass. The line-up epitomises the club’s dedication to raw body music. Robert Hood will play on Saturday On Friday 17th October, Fabric’s three rooms will be bass heavy, with drum & bass veterans DJ Hype, Andy C, Fabio and Dillinja in room two, whilst Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts and WhoMadeWho will take over the main room. Room 3 on Friday will be London breakbeat DJs Tayo, Toddla T and Joe Ransome. Saturday 18th October is a techno fans wet dream with Luciano, Shinedoe and Martin Buttrich in room 1 alongside club residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis. In room 2, US minimal master Robert Hood will play with Mark Broom, Baby Ford and Soul Designer live. Room 3 meanwhile is a veritable deep house feast with Omar S, Patrice Scott and Keith Worthy all appearing. With so many quality names on the bill, the club is earmarked to go all the way till midday on Sunday (prepare for a major battle). Gouranga London @ The Battersea Barge - Minimal/Electro 12th Sept 2008
Leeds based Electro/Techno/Breaks night Gouranga (don't be expecting a Hare Krishna movement), will host there 3rd London event tomorrow night at the endearing Battersea Barge. Always an event to remember, with funkin breaks/electro controlling the dancefloor for the first half of the night and classy, twisted minimal taking the night to the end. The venue gets packed quickly and the crowd is some what samey, but the atmosphere is sweet. Drinks are pretty reasonable and there is a large outdoor area next to the barge if it all gets too much.

On January 24th 2009 The End, London's loudest, most intimate, underground nightclub will close. The closure of The End at 18 West Central Street brings the final tally of important electronic music clubs to have closed in London in the last 12 months to five. The End joins Turnmills, The Cross, Canvas and The Key on the list of doomed dance music clubs that have disappeared in a cloud of development dust this year. In December 2007, The Cross, Canvas and The Key got smashed to smithereens to make way for the Channel Tunnel Rail link. Then in March, Turnmills nightclub in Faringdon made way for some real-estate developers who turned the building into a bland office space. So what the hell is going on with London’s club scene? The End was home of many a Drum and Bass, Techno, New Rave, Electro, Funk night and all with the addition of a sound system that would leave your ears ringing for a good couple of days. It's location, in central London, 3 minutes walk from Tottenham Court Road or Holborn mean that it was easily accessable for everyone. This is a real shame, especially as it seems we are left with very few options now. Fabric, Ministry of Sound, SE1, Colleseum, Heaven, Egg are left as the biggies of London. Why? Warehouse parties, Outdoor parties, House Parties? Why? Expensive drinks just aren't covering the costs and keeping developers out. Grrrr..... is all I can say, especially as it is probably going to turn into some average office block or carpark.
Montreal and New York based electro funk/new skool disco duo Chromeo are are coming to London on the 21st August as part of their European Tour. Where they will also be playing at:
The duo is made up of P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel), on keyboards, synthesizers, and talk box, and Dave 1 ( David Macklovitch) on guitar and lead vocals. The two have been best friends since childhood and they describe themselves as the only successful Arab/Jewish collaboration since he beginning of time.
Their debut album She's in Control came out in 2004 and included the single "Needy Girl". In 2005, they released a Mix CD of funky dance tracks on Eskimo Belgium records entitled Un Joli Mix Pour Toi (A Pretty Mix For You). During early 2007 Chromeo supported indie rock group Bloc Party on their British tour. They also released the single "Fancy Footwork" as well as their second album of the same name. The band has also been named MTV's Artist of the Week for October 1st 2007.

San Miguel are putting on 5 music events over the summer, under the name Hidden Depths. There have already been 2. The first of which was in London at the Soho Revue Bar, which is an amazing venue actually. Prior to the event no one knew what the line up was, just that it was hosted by Mark Jones of Wall of Sound. The secrecy of the line up is the running theme of Hidden Depths. So in the end, everyone was treated to the likes of Shortwave Set, A Human, Propellerheads, and The Infadels, and lots of free San Miguel.
The second event was on the 10th July in Manchester, at a venue called Joshua Brooks. It was a unbelievable night. It was covered in Hidden Depths decor, big leather sofas, and huge LCD screens showing art film. The highlight though was definitely the music... obviously. Again the public were only aware that The Glimmers were going to be there. In the end though the crowd was blessed with the likes of THE Grandmaster Flash, and the Unabombers. The Glimmers smashed it, Unabombers smashed it, and The Grandmaster definitely smashed it. So that’s Hidden Depths so far. There are 3 more events to come. Secretsundaze, Chromeo, and It’s Pop It’s Art. Secretsundaze is on the 31st July at T-Bar, London. Featuring the likes of Theo Parrish, James Priestley, Giles Smith and 3 more TBC. The Chromeo event is 21st August at The End, there are another 9 acts playing including a certain somebody who was surprsingly epic at Glastonbury. The final event It’s Pop It’s Art, is on the 18th September at The Amersham Arms. Hosted by Fred Deakin of Lemon Jelly who I love.
