London’s The End club is set to close its famous metal doors forever on January 25th, with a final double dose of clubbing bliss. For the last few weeks the outside of The End has been headed with ‘Goodbye Baby’ on neon blue paint and Richie Hawtin, Loco Diceand Magda recently played their last-ever party at the venue which kept going till 11am the next day. The final Saturday night swan song will see DJs Laurent Garnier, Layo & Bushwacka!, Mr. C, Erol Alkan, Ben Watt, Jimpster, Will Saul, Rory Phillips and Don Mac throw down beats. It’ll be an emotional farewell for a venue that has remained committed to underground electronic music since it first opened on 2nd December 1995. Of course, it wouldn’t be fitting to have a closing party without an afterparty and afterhour mongers Jaded have the honour of giving the soundsystem its last ever bleep in the adjorning AKA bar on Sunday morning from 5.30am. Raymundo Rodriguez and some very special guests will play (at a guess, it’ll be Garnier, Mr. C and Layo & Bushwacka!) at the afterparty which might go for 24 hours or longer. What will happen to the venue is up to its new owners, but no doubt it’ll become another bland Central London office space, with perhaps only the faintest aroma of human sweat about the place to indicate the energy that was expended by hundreds of thousands of dancers over its illustrious 13-year history.

I'm not quite sure where I stand with Drum n Bass at the moment. I used to love jump-up, but now certain high-profile producers seem to churn out wave upon wave of terrible terrible stuff, and the raves are full of wankers. On the other hand, certain heads are pulling out some nice, dark numbers. One thing's for certain though - mcs can do one! I'm loving this jokes tune by Noisia at the moment. Check it.
I've only recently got into techno, and to be honest don't know much about it. One thing I do know however, is that the production duo Format:B are sick. Of the tunes I've got, theirs are the ones which seem to stick out. Here's one my favourites. Banging.
This Jack Beats remix is probably my favourite tune of 2008. Since it's creation, every DJ dropped it in every set ever. Why? Because it's FUCKING SICK! Drum & bass hero Grooverider will play his first gig since being released from prison in Dubai on October 11th 2008 at London’s Koko club. The jungle pioneer was recently freed after the Dubai Royal Family pardoned him - Grooverider was sentenced to four years in jail for possession of cannabis in February. Grooverider will play back to back with his lifelong friend and collaborator Fabio, and a handful of supporting DJs will play too, including Shy FX, Dillinja, Bailey, Mickey Finn and Jumpin’ Jack Frost. Top Track: London Elektricity – All Hell Is Breaking Loose
After a two year hiatus London Elektricity, aka Tony Colman, has returned with an album full of soulful energetic tracks which will no doubt stick a gigantic, electrified cattle prod into the arse of drum & bass.
Consisting of live, orchestral, funk driven dnb, the album is a compilation of massive anthems. One track however specifically stands out, the aptly titled, ‘All Hell Is Breaking Loose’.
Tony Colman, who runs Hospital Records, with fellow cohort Chris Goss has constantly been a forward thinking innovator within drum & bass, and with this track has set an entirely new standard.
Incorporating a vast array of influences from soul, blues and rock this track maximises various production elements to it’s greatest. Some producers within the scene can knock out tracks within a few hours, but from one listen you can easily tell why Tony Colman took so long to perfect this.
With a massive soul sample exclaiming, “You can’t hear me, all hell is breaking loose,” the tone of the track is set instantly.
A massive funk bassline runs though this track like a juggernaut whilst interspersed with John Barry-like orchestral samples.
Jungle Drummer throws in a crazed mish-mash of jazz driven high velocity beats that challenges anyone to not join in a crazed air drum salute.
This hell driven, adrenaline-fuelled reaches its crescendo when the track bursts into a massive guitar solo, pinpointing the genius and true creative nature of London Elektricity.
Take note that this fella is a massive fan of The Equalizers after they played back2back at Bristol's the Tube. Bing Tings!
Drum and Bass DJ, Grooverider is released from jail
After serving 10 months of his 4 year jail sentence for the possesion of a mere 2.16g of weed found in his luggage, the vetran drum&bass DJ, Grooverider has officially been released from prison in Dubai.
The DJ (whose real name is Raymond Bingham) called his arrest 'ridiculous' and declaring: "I must have forgotten the spliff. It was a small amount. Back home I would not even get prosecuted.", and upon release has vowed never to return to teh UAE. Stating that all he wanted to do was spend time with his family and friends.
Dallas Austin had to count on a conservative Republican senator/songwriter, an '80s R&B singer who is inexplicably massive in the Middle East (Lionel Ritchie), a real-estate mogul, several ambassadors from around the globe and a Grammy-winning producer before he was released.
If only Grooverider had such friends! I'm not sure Andy C and Roni Size would cut it, perhaps Foxy and Det might help though. Anyways, I'm glad he's out, what a ridiculous sentence for such a joint. Looking forward to his return on the DnB scene and Radio 1xtra.

On January 24th 2009 The End, London's loudest, most intimate, underground nightclub will close. The closure of The End at 18 West Central Street brings the final tally of important electronic music clubs to have closed in London in the last 12 months to five. The End joins Turnmills, The Cross, Canvas and The Key on the list of doomed dance music clubs that have disappeared in a cloud of development dust this year. In December 2007, The Cross, Canvas and The Key got smashed to smithereens to make way for the Channel Tunnel Rail link. Then in March, Turnmills nightclub in Faringdon made way for some real-estate developers who turned the building into a bland office space. So what the hell is going on with London’s club scene? The End was home of many a Drum and Bass, Techno, New Rave, Electro, Funk night and all with the addition of a sound system that would leave your ears ringing for a good couple of days. It's location, in central London, 3 minutes walk from Tottenham Court Road or Holborn mean that it was easily accessable for everyone. This is a real shame, especially as it seems we are left with very few options now. Fabric, Ministry of Sound, SE1, Colleseum, Heaven, Egg are left as the biggies of London. Why? Warehouse parties, Outdoor parties, House Parties? Why? Expensive drinks just aren't covering the costs and keeping developers out. Grrrr..... is all I can say, especially as it is probably going to turn into some average office block or carpark.

I first heard the orginal of this track while on the bus, and really fell for it. Adele is a serious talent. BUT when I heard Hometown Glory after High Contrast had got hold of it, I realised what this tune could be. This for me is the tune of the summer. Cheesy in its own special way, but this one definitely strikes a cord. I'm thinking these two should work together more often. What do you think?
